Preserving, Protecting, and Enjoying Our Vanishing Natural Spaces

Make plans to join us on Wednesday, February 22, as we welcome Catawba Lands Conservancy Executive Director Tom Okel as he describes their important work, plans for the Carolina Thread, and ways to enjoy the trails and local lands.

Twenty years ago, Mary McDaniel fought to convince people to notice the beauty and significance of Mountain Island Lake. That effort has preserved drinking water for 750,000 Charlotte-area residents, and protected natural wildlife habitat. It also marked the beginning of Catawba Lands Conservancy. Today, the Conservancy now has more than 11,000 acres of protected local lands that preserve clean water, farmlands, wildlife habitats and connections to nature. As lead agency for the Carolina Thread Trail, the Conservancy connects lives to nature by inviting people outdoors to hike, bike, paddle and play on a 15-county network of trails and greenways that will ultimately connect more than 2 million people in the Carolinas.

The meeting starts off at 6:30 PM for refreshments and a chance to meet and socialize with other Sierra Club members and friends. The business meeting and program will begin at 7:00 PM. Non-members and potential new members are very welcomed!

Central Piedmont Sierra Club meetings are held the fourth Wednesday of the month at 7:00 pm (unless noted in an announcement) in the Mahlon Adams Pavilion at Freedom Park, 2435 Cumberland Avenue, Charlotte, NC, 28203. Cumberland Avenue is off of the 1500 block of East Boulevard.

The program is free and open to the public and you do not have to be a member to attend. Free parking is available.
