March Events and Opportunities

March 13-15, 2009

@ Myers Park Baptist Church

For March we plan to forego our normal meeting for a chance to really promote and drive attendence to three wonderful days at Myers Park Baptist Church with Dr. David Ordd, Professor of Environmental Studies and Politics at Oberlin College. Here’s the rundown:

  • Friday March 13, 7:00 PM: The Eleventh Hour film and discussion
  • Saturday March 14, 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM: “The Environmental and Politics in a Time of Hope” public lecture
  • Sunday March 15, 9:45 AM – 10:45 AM: “The Hour Before Dawn: Challenges, Courage, Faith and Hope” public lecture

All three of these terrific events are free and open to the public. Please call Rick Goodin at 704.334.7232 (Ext. 15) for more information. March 21, 2009 Volunteer Event

@ James Martin Middle School

When: Saturday March 21st, 9:00 – 12:00 PM (First day of spring!)

Mark your calendars now! We have an exciting opportunity for volunteers to get involved in the local community while celebrating the first day of spring outside! Come help James Martin Middle School (IBM Drive, near intersection of Harris Blvd and I-85) plant an outdoor learning environment.

About the event: On March 21st, 100+ eager students, teachers, parents and other volunteers will be gathering to turn what is now a drab, sparse entry way into what we hope to be an inspiring garden that provides opportunities for positive outdoor learning experiences for the students. We’ll be there to help them get started, but this project will also serve as an ongoing community service project for the students, allowing them to take pride in their campus and create opportunities to teach important life lessons. Let’s help them kick on the project!

What we need: Volunteers will help students plan, prepare and create the garden. We are working to have one or two Mecklenburg County Master Gardeners on hand, so NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY (and you may even learn something for free)! We’ll also need help with refreshments, set-up, and clean-up. If gardening is your passion and you would like to help lead, teach something, or have a suggestion around the structure of the event, please let us know. Also, please let us know if you’ll be able to bring garden tools (shovels, trowels, hoes, rakes, etc) or able to donate refreshments.

Please email Liz Barrett at eliz.barrett@gmail.com if you are interested, have questions or want to sign up to volunteer for the event.
